Suleyman Demir notes:C.hintoniorum ssp.hintoniorum from the Mexican state of Nuevo León was first described by Dicht & Luthy in 1999
and they named the plant in honour of the Hinton family, whose members do a unique job as botanists in the 4th. generation now and on whose farmland this species grows, too.
Ssp. geoffreyi found by Hinton's and is also described by Dicht & Luthy in 2003 and they named this plant in honour of Hinton's little son whose name is Geoffrey.
Ssp.geoffreyi is a dwarf mountain form with much smaller bodies (2 cm high) than ssp.hintoniorum ( 9-15 cm), flat globose form (against globose), tuberous root (against fibrous roots) and smaller tubercles (11 mm long against 22 mm) arranged in a smaller number of spirals.
The generative characteristics (flowers, fruits, seeds) are practically identical. It grows in a completely different, mountaneous habitat and not on plains and no intermediate forms are known.
This ssp. is vulnerable due to low incidence and extensive farming. (R.F.Dicht & A.D.Luthy, Coryphantha, 2005)
