Re: Lighting for Opuntias, Euphorbs.
That's pretty compelling info that I didn't know about especially in the 4000k range. Obviously the energy available is twice that of a 6500k bulb. My challenge has been to keep heat buildup low and optimize my energy usage. Ct. has the third highest electrical rates in the US and the rates migrate...

Here's a good example of what I mean with the 4000k vs the others.

Re: Lighting for Opuntias, Euphorbs.
If you could only use one spectrum I'd go with the 3400k but if you're mixing go with 50/50 3400/6400k. If you can find 4000-4200k those would be the best option imho.

Re: My cacti and other plants
I've tried grafting some things to Pereskiopsis, too, but most of the grafts failed. How did you keep the scions on the rootstocks? I used a bit of superglue. I've seen some people use things like rubber bands but seedlings are so tiny I don't think rubber bands will work for them. Did you just pla...

Re: Cacti micropropagation
I've been thinking about doing the same. I have no TC experience, but it's always seemed like an interesting thing to try. I've been reading " Plants from Test Tubes: An Introduction to Micropropagation ", the quintessential comprehensive introduction to TC. Incidentally, it includes prot...

Re: Cacti micropropagation
I've read that 70% alcohol is better to use than a higher percentage. Seems counter-intuitive but I read that the higher percentage alcohol can harden some microbes against drying out and the 70% alcohol drys them out just right. Or, perhaps the difference, if any, is minimal and it really doesn't ...

Re: My cacti and other plants
I'm curious if you'll be able to germinate those Austrocactus seeds you just ordered. I've tried them a couple times and had no luck. Looks like you've been having really good germination from the other cacti you've tried. Have you tried Sclerocactus, yet? Hi soilsifter! Thank you for stopping by. ...
