Why do my E. subdenudata seedlings have spines?
Hi,
I just recently realised a kind of disconnect: my seedlings of Echinopsis subdenudata (~ 6 months old) have quite a lot of spines. But all photos of the adult versions I've seen show them "spineless". What's going on? Do they loose them as the seedlings ages?
Thanks. Best.

M. elongata cristata? And M. perbella?
Hello, I presume the first one to be M. elongata cristata. IMG_6163.jpg IMG_6162.jpg The second one I am not so sure. Is it M. perbella? It has very distinct black central spines in the upper part of the cactus. IMG_6167.jpg IMG_6166.jpg If someone please could help me with the ID I'd appreciate it....

Corking? Or Trouble?
Hi all,
The base of this Espostoa guentheri yellowed in the past weeks. It's not soft/mushy. But I'd also be surprised if it is corking since the plant is still relatively small (about 10 cm in height). What do you think?
Thanks. Best.

Re: Relative Light Demand
20. Lithops various 50% shade in almost coastal CA probably the same in AZ, actually everything in Pots needs shade in AZ I doubt that I will have to shade the Lithops. The latitude of Berlin is halfway between Calgary and Edmonton, Canada. So, too much light is probably not the issue. Best.

Re: Relative Light Demand
The question is very broad and a dissertation can written on this topic. So do not be surprised that no one wants to start enlighten this topic. I'ii just mention some aspects as I also grow my cacti mainly on windowsills. Most sun demanding genera are Asrtophytum and Ferocactus so these should tak...

Relative Light Demand
Hi, I am growing cacti and Lithops indoors on window sills behind a large east-facing window wall and a regular sized adjacent south-east facing window. The plants on the east-facing window sill get direct sunlight till about 11:30 am and the one in the south-east facing window sill till about 12:30...

Two-headed Seedling (Marginatocereus marginatus)
Hello,
This seedling (lower right) appears to be growing with two heads. They are emerging from the body of the seedling above the soil. Where does that lead to? Cristate? Monstrose?
Thanks. Best.

Re: Repotting cacti with buds/flowers- a bad idea?
Hi, I’ve made two observations in this regard in recent weeks. First, I had bought a Notocactus schlosseri and it developed some small buds in the first few days I had it at home. Then, I repotted it and all growth stopped. A few weeks later, one of the little buds started growing again and develope...

Re: Seeds disappearing. White mold instead.
Yep. Lesson learned. Thankfully most of them are still alive. So far.greenknight wrote: ↑Fri Jun 04, 2021 2:23 am Those seedlings are far enough along that it was okay to remove the lid and give them fresh air. Changing the watering method too soon was your only mistake.
Thanks for the coaching all along!

Re: Seeds disappearing. White mold instead.
Low temps are also bad especially with tropical species like Melo which should be kept at about 25 - 32C! And that's another good hint! When I removed the lid I of course turned off the heating pad. So, the temperature the seedlings then were exposed to were around 20 C rather than 25 C as before. ...

Re: Seeds disappearing. White mold instead.
A weekly deep soaking is the wrong approach with cactus seedlings - the substrate should be kept evenly damp, never saturated. I guess I learned that the hard way. Though all other pots in this grow house appear to be fine still. But I will change of course. Commercial nurseries achieve this with c...
