In the top pic, the plant on the left is most like A. brevahamatus. I am growing about 60 plants from seeds and they are now about 2" tall. None look like the plant on the right although I do have a couple of double stemmed ones. Also, mine are growing rapidly without the graft. Some bloomed th...

O. phaeacantha seeds

I have a large plant (v. comanchica) in my cactus garden with lots of fruits. You pay the postage and I will harvest the seeds for you and send them. I just threw away a bunch of pads which I pruned off but may be able to get a couple more if you want them. You can PM me with your answer and address...

No problem. We have no pumice here in North Texas, we use expanded shale which is cheap and plentiful.

No Daiv, I didn't make it. Just happened to be passing thru Val Verde a couple of years ago and saw it. A local lady told me that it was some kind of project by the Chamber of Commerce or something.

OK, I just have to chime in on this issue. I also live in North Central Texas and built a new greenhouse last fall. I thought about it for several years before I built so here is what I can tell you: Consider the kind of plants you plan to grow and then the location and the size. The city ordnance d...

Yes, Peter, I think Sul Ross is sort of like the cactus Vatican. They also have a wonderful cactus garden and greenhouse. How were you able to get seeds from them? Several years ago I bought one of their plants from CDRI. It is a brevahamatus X pallidus and at ten years old is a very nice specimen. ...

Well, Loph if you really hate cooking you probably won't want to mess with preparing opuntia. But here is what I know/do: Most folks here in Texas know the pads as Nopales and when prepared as food as Nopalitos (Spanish). So, I usually harvest the pads in the spring when they are fully grown but not...

C. Missouriensis

Thanks Daiv. My dad planted it many years ago and my mother gave it to me after he passed away in 1979. It has been in the same pot all this time, left outside, and never been fertilized.

OK Peter, maybe #2 is not a sulcata. I was basing the ID on the shape and spine density of the picture but if the photo was take near Lajitas then it probably is an atypical echinus. It still closely resembles the sulcatas in my collection. I was thinking maybe you could go back when it blooms and f...

I'm thinking the first one is ID'd correctly but the second one is C. sulcata. Final answer.

Most of the folks I know here in Texas use expanded shale which is not a clay product. It is heat treated shale and is very commonly available at about $8.00 per 50 pound bag. Good stuff. Another name for it is hadite.
