Re: BRC's cacti adventure...in a flat
Snowcat - Just noticed your "more hospitable" climate change! No, you know the old gardener's axiom -- just keep planting until you find the right cultivar, subspecies, change up the protection(more rocks), more drainage, etc. Oh yeah, and I've added more pricklies -- chollas, but even tho...

Re: BRC's cacti adventure...in a flat
Snowcat - Funny you should check in, it's probably been that long for me too, so I was surprised to see this post show up in my email. Same with me, have been starting (mostly) cold-hardy for my "new" outdoor beds. Not quite Moscow weather, but plenty of -10F & then 65F with rain, snow...

Re: Quick hardy cactus list
Hey, Ricelg -- Not on much, usually just answering a stray question from the Forum like this ;-) But very much growing, doing fairly large #'s of seeds. Have moved to a new "farmette" with 2 horses now, so between having to start all over with new C & S beds (13 with @ 4 more to go; bu...

Re: Cold hardy cacti for zone 5a?
With moving to the "other end" of Keuka Lake with totally different soil type (very heavy clay -- yuck!), I've been forced to draw on all the wisdom of the Forum -- deep, coarse gravel, layered with smaller "road" gravel, covered with my "special" cactus "soil"...

You're definitely "preachin' to the choir" , so I've been forced to love Opuntia's far more that I every thought possible!

Re: Cold hardy cacti for zone 5a?
I doubt it, but no harm in testing. I, too, have gone to several Agave & Yuccas species -- from seed this (early) Spring. Plan on using them as "protectors" for other cacti. Have also lost most of these "standard" CH's over the past 2 Winters, but a Y. nana did make it. Can o...

Re: Cold hardy cacti for zone 5a?
Jnewmark - you hit the nail on the head! And add heaving -- especially damaging to the several Echinocereus seedling beds I had constructed. Weren't elevated near as much as yours, but were a good 12" deep. Even well-established plants underwent a lot of heaving. Thanks goodess the roots were q...

Re: Some outside pictures
Haven't been on "The Forum" hardly at all, Dennis, & just got thru taking some pics of Snowdrops -- so you know how far behind we are (after an even more brutal Winter than last year!). But your outside plant blossoms still take my breath away! =D> Have started a bunch of CH Agaves &am...

Re: my seedlings
Actually have 2 strains of sneedii (396 & 397) from MG going, CJ - 397 had much better germination. They're coming up on a year now, @ 1 1/2" with lots of offsets & out on parially shaded back deck in their original plastic tubs. Plan to get them into terracotta "troughs" over...

Re: my seedlings
Nice job, CJ! Grow mostly CH cacti, but there are a few Titanop & Aloinop's that are 0F tolerant! Also just like their "warty/knobby" features. Germination & subsequent growth has been much spottier that with most of the cacti. Am using baggie method, but don't know if there is dif...

Re: Vermont Cold-Hardy, 2014
Really Nice, Dave! Like the mixture of different rock/boulder & different brick/blocks! Has a very "abandoned & being taken over by the "spiney creatures" " look ;-) Discovered another survivor of the "Winter from Hell" a few days ago -- the O. erinaceae v. ursi...

Re: Vermont Cold-Hardy, 2014
humifusa didn't miss a beat & the 2 plants probably have 60 buds plus pads! Have a poly, poly X fragilis, aurea, several fragilis cv's -- all a doing great, altho aurea only put out 1 pad & no blossom buds. Even have a humifusa pad cutting that was in a 3 X 3 plastic pot that sat outside (ab...

Re: Vermont Cold-Hardy, 2014
Congrats, Dave; Thanks to Andy =D> Just put in 4 reichenbach. & 7 reichenb. v. baileyi seedlings this afternoon! Guessing I have to stick around Skyline Drive for another 2 yrs, & pray next 2 Winters are not repeats of this past one. 1st humifusa opened today & have dozens of buds; other...
