Re: HELLO, WHAT ARE THESE CACTUSES?

I disagree on the first one. Parodia magnifica doesn't cluster like that. They look much more like some kind of Echinocereus to me.

Re: Who has the oldest cactus?

I have an organ pipe cactus that came as part of a starter kit cactus garden from the gift shop at the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum in 1996. So it's 24 years old. From 2 inches to 2 feet.

That's a really nice fat astrophytum. The more ball-like they are, the better I like 'em.

Can I get one?

I'm bringing up this old topic because I remember seeing a dwarf opuntia basilaris somewhere. Maybe it was this thread, but I think it was at a cactus sale somewhere.

Anyhow, Miles2go no longer has ANY opuntias on the list. Anybody know anywhere else I might get one?

Buck, I will look for you! And I'll put Cactiguide on my nametag.

I'm only there for the last two days, though.

Anybody going?

I thought I'd resurrect this thread just in case somebody decided to go. Will I be the sole representative of Cactiguide there?

Dave, can I put Cactiguide.com on my badge as my affiliation? It's the only one I have! :D

Ebay

I think I've bought from aridjungle before, but I don't remember the results. After you've made several attempts to resolve this and allowed a couple of weeks for a response, leave negative feedback providing the exact facts. "Plant sent without roots; no response to email." That's much mo...

I'm not surprised at all. I left all my cacti in the cold attic next to a window, but getting very little light all winter. It got really cold up there, too. They're all fine. This is probably a great solution if you don't have a cool winter spot to store them. You sure couldn't keep them outside in...

Peat?

It seems like people are using "peat" when they mean "peat moss." The latter is what is commonly put into houseplant soil mixes. It's a dried plant that's been all ground up that holds water very well. Peat is that black stuff that's organic matter that has started its journey to...

Nomenclature

I think weingartia and sulcorebutia have all been absorbed by rebutia now, haven't they?

I have one of those "weingartia" above. Mine has loads of wool. It looks like somebody dripped sweet roll frosting all over it.

I'd say Parodia, but I'm not sure with all those branches at the top.

It's a nice one, though. Be SURE to give it as much direct sun as possible in a dorm room. Being inside, you can hardly ever give them too much light.
