Re: 3 year old cactus

I don't think you guys know how happy this makes me if these are indeed saguaros. I was just about to buy some saguaro seed so I knew for certain that I had some growing. I was hoping they were as well as a couple of other similar cactus that I have growing but wasn't sure. I am surprised at the spe...

Re: Echinocereus reichenbachii?

Thanks for the fast response. Now that you mention it, I remember a group of pigeons suddenly showing up on my back deck last year and were eating seed. Something spooked them and I saw one hop on top of my seedlings. I remember thinking that it was going to end up smashing them if he didn't get off...

San pedro problems

These were grown from seed and probably planted in 2010 or 2011. They were all looking great until the end of the last year when the largest started showing signs of sickness or stress. It was the end of the season so I stopped watering and when they all stopped growing, I stored them in a dark gara...

3 year old cactus

These seeds were purchased 3 years ago and were part of a variety pack that I got from an online cactus seed vendor. I ended up with many different types but potted these together since they look like the same species. They have been relatively fast growing and they are in an 8" pot in the pict...

Echinocereus reichenbachii?

These are about 2 years old if I am not mistaken. I ordered from an online seed store and purchased 5 types of Echinocereus but lost the labels along the way. I do know that only two varieties had any that survived and the other 3 varieties got eaten up by fungus. So I was hoping for verification an...

Re: Growth rate of Saguaros grown from seed?

Wow these things really do take their time, don't they. I guess I will sow a few and enjoy them when I'm an old man if I am lucky enough to make it that long. Thanks for the information, Hardy and Aiko.

Growth rate of Saguaros grown from seed?

I read in a few places that a 10 year old Saguaro might only be 1.5 inches but all of these sources are referring to Saguaros in their native setting. Does anyone have an idea of the typical growth rate when the plant is potted and given regular water and fertilizer?

Thanks

Re: 1 year old cactus ID help

Thanks, Dr. Dean. Hopefully next year I can get the Opuntia straightened out and with some Agave, I can start a little succulent garden here.

Re: 1 year old cactus ID help

Thanks for the help so far. I am not too familiar with cactus naming conventions but those labeled as Echinocereus could be a lot of different things correct? I actually ordered some Echinocereus coccineus seeds and they look so different at the same stage. As far as the opuntia, should I just leave...

1 year old cactus ID help

Im looking for an id on these young cactus that I started about a year ago. I asked before but they were too small and still under fluorescents inside. They spent the fall and winter indoors and now have had a whole growing season in direct sunlight and they grew a lot. These were from a variety pac...

Will it hurt a small cactus to repot it deeper than it was?

I have some San Pedros that I have grown from seed. They are about 2 years old now and maybe 3 inches at most. A few days ago I repotted them all because I could see their roots creeping out of the bottom of their pots. I accidentally re-potted one about a quarter to a half in inch deeper that it wa...

Re: 3 types of cactus from a variety pack that need an id.

I had posted this on another website a few days ago and someone replied yesterday also identifying the first as ferocactus, the second as Echinocereus and the third as E. grusonii. That is good enough for me.

Thanks again for the help! =D>

Re: 3 types of cactus from a variety pack that need an id.

Thanks, Daiv. I was afraid that it might be too soon but I thought I would give it a shot. They were all sort of mixed in together in the same pots and some were healthy and enjoying the sun and others not so much. I did look up Ferocactus after you mentioned it and my seedlings from the top photo r...

3 types of cactus from a variety pack that need an id.

Hi everyone These are all from one of those Ferry Morse mix packs that you can pick up at large chain stores where I live. It was my intro into to the world of cactus about two years ago. :) They were all sown at the same time and they are about an inch tall now. I re-potted them all because it was ...
