Ooooh! And the last one, that I didn't think looked quite ready, just started!
Though we're going to have to leave and take our time lapse controller with us. Sad, but beautiful so far!

Omigosh omigosh omigosh!
I picked up a couple of Gymnocalycium Mihanovichii Friedrichii plants a few weeks ago. One had a large flower stalk growing and the other had several middle-sized ones going on. I've been checking on them every day and been amazed at how the scale-looking bits started looking softer and petal-y. Tod...

Disposing of 'Mother of Thousands'?
I picked up a couple of kalanchoes in a selection of succulents because they looked neat but I didn't actually know anything about them. Learning how invasive they can be left me a bit nervous, but it took learning how toxic they are to decide I can't keep them. I live in an apartment complex and we...

Re: Do you appreciate spring?
I guess I like spring. I enjoy the winter, or at least our idea of winter. We'll drop into the '50's and even the '40's off and on, dip below freezing a few times and have usually one week where roads have a layer of ice that shuts down the city for a day or two. Spring is nice because its a few-wee...

What causes these kinds of changes?
This guy was labeled Crassula clavata in the tiny planter I got it in. It's gone through 3 major appearance changes. I assume the first is just getting water in its system, but the second... I had an echeveria that grew treelike because it wasn't getting enough sun, but this guy has had loads of sun...

Re: Cactus ID/Pest ID
Omigosh I feel horrible now! one other cactus I picked up from the same friend's field turned out to have been eaten from the inside somehow, so I assumed it was something else bad. The only other guys I have with flowers are a couple of Echeverias, and they have stalks. That's exciting! I hope the ...

Cactus ID/Pest ID
Brought these guys home from a friend's ranch outside of Amarillo. Potted them this last weekend, and today the big'un seems to have small tufts of wool growing out of it. I'm assuming they're pests - mealybugs, maybe, from the pics? But I piled a tuft out piece bu piece and didn't see anything that...

Re: Soil for South African succulents
I keep running into the term, but I haven't been able to find a solid resource for what it means. So... What is a loam? What is the texture people mean when they say loamy? Google gives me results that its a mix of sand, clay and "silt", which seems to be as vague a term as grit can be. /-...

Re: Soil for South African succulents
So, no coir or topsoil at all? Should I just go with pure rock, or is there anything I should put in with it? I can make a run by a nursery tonight but I'd like to get them into something I trust ASAP. Actually, I should ask - is there a way to clear the dirt off of the roots without basically soaki...

Re: Succulents succulents succulents!
Woo! *happy taxonomy dance* I finished getting the ones from the container with horrible glued rocks out of dirt and roots cleared. The green and red guys had tree-trunk-like stems buried below the surface. That was kind of cool to discover. x-D Two of the green/blue tree-lookin' guys looked like th...

Re: Growing Lithops and Other Difficult Mesembs
I'm guessing from the list here that I shouldn't put my Pleiospolis and Fenestraria in the same pot, eh? One is listed as a summer grower, the other as winter. x-D

Re: Soil for South African succulents
Hm, it was a $3 bag or so from a local nursery. If I remember correctly from the last time I used it, it's basically just dirt (decomposed organic matter, I suppose?) with few to no large chunks/pieces of tree and the like in it. Could be misremembering, though.

Repotting flowering plants?
I've got a couple of Echeveria plants that have flowering stalks growing from them. They had them when I picked them up from the nurseries, and they're in nursery soil that is likely peat-based. I want to get them into soil I'm familiar with in more detail, but I'd really prefer to keep the flowerin...

Re: Succulents succulents succulents!
Awesome, thanks! I got them out of the horrible glued-on rocks tonight and plan to repot everything tonight. I think I'm down to the green and red one in picture 5 and the tall green-blue guy in picture 6.
Super-excited about the kalanchoe plants. They look amazing. <3

Re: Soil for South African succulents
I'll keep the lithops separate, then, and put the other guys together. x-D So should my 1:1:1 soil/coir/shale mix work for all of them, or are there any I should go with 1:1:2 or less? (Sorry for my confusion! I'm not entirely sure what counts as gritty, especially since the shale pieces are pretty ...
