Re: Looks like E. grusonii, but is not. What is it?

I find that a young E. grusonii looks significantly different from a mature E. grusonii. Which are you referring to? I could see someone mistaking a few of the ferocactus species for one.
Or what about Echinocactus platycanthus?

Gymnocalycium ID ......

Hi, I've been trying to ID this cacti which is obviously a gymno ... I saw a photo in a book that made me think that it is G. Quehlianum, but I'm not as sure from the photos in google images. Does anyone know what it is? Thanks!

Thanks for your comments and cacti links! I really wanted the 'save' the little hairy green guy on the first pic... but I thought it would only be encouraging the seller to make up more cacti fancy dress...

Beautiful on the inside :)

My heart went out to these guys ... does anyone have any similar creative/abuse pictures to share? Someone's probably got lots of spines in their fingers from applying googley eyes & pipe cleaners.

US VIrgin Islands

Hello, here are a few pics of cacti I thought I'd share from the US Virgin Islands. Sorry, again I don't know what they are. I'm not even sure that they are native actually... but there were a lot of them around the shorelines. There were whopper iguanas climbing all around the vegetation... I even ...

Re: chile con spiky:)

Hahaha... yes, it was for the sake of the photo... but did have to walk into the shot from the front... the spiky way:):) Here is a pic of the burrow under the cacti rock and also the penguin. I was AMAZED to read that the red flowers were not cacti flowers at all! Pretty parasites...

chile con spiky:) now with penguin pic!:)

I took some photos of cacti in Chile and thought someone might like to see some wild plants... I'm sorry I don't know what any of them are. I took them all on the main road from Santiago to punta choros and on isla damas off the Chilean coast. The rocks with the red-flowering cacti atop had humboldt...

Gosh, thank you so much for all the kind comments and information:) DaveW, the links are great!... on your second link, I think I found the name of the unknown opuntia I posted from north seymour. It said that it is only found on seymour (echios var zacana). When I flew into the Galapagos the quaran...

Re: Pics from the Galapagos islands...

Thank you everyone for your lovely comments!:) There were tons of lava cacti.... clumps every 50m or so across the lava field... they didn't get much camera time though because they are right next to hundreds of basking marine iguanas on the nearby coast:) Peter B: I've posted a couple more pics so ...

Galapagos islands, New Photos ...

Hello, I'm new to the forum and thought I'd share some pics I took of cacti from different islands in the Galapagos. Sorry I don't know the names of them. The land iguanas were eating the cacti leaves from fallen cacti trees and hiding from the full sun in the shade of the huge cacti trunks. The tru...

Re: let there be light...

Thank you so much for your reply! Does letting them go dormant mean that they can possibly survive 12C day and minimum 5C nights inside without any lights at all?... or do I still need some lights or heat pad just to keep them alive and dormant? I don't mind if the cacti don't grow during winter, I'...

Hello, I'm a newbie:) I've hatched out my cacti... about a hundred of them in pots in snap-lock bags! I'm very excited, but now terrified because they are about 2 months old and we are heading towards winter here in the southern hem. I want to get them a light and I've found one online and was wonde...

OMG! Mum says 'what virus!!??' eeeiiik. I hope we don't have a virus, everything else seems very healthy around the garden. Mum says she thinks they grow like that from pure neglect!:) Pest we have mostly are snails, slaters and kangaroos. We walked around the garden and found several more crested s...
