Re: Winter lights
To provide winter dormancy you have to keep the plants dry and cold, but not necessarily at the lower end. 55 deg F is just right for most of the cacti. Providing this conditions, they can even do without any light. Many people that are unable to provide adequate light and temperature winter conditi...

Re: Custom Cactus Soil Mix
An year or so ago I downloaded from cactiguide.com and saved on my computer an article (The Soil Hexalogue) by Dag Panco de Grid. Dag Panco has devoted part of his life to study cacti soil mixes and shared his experience. The article contains 38 pages, with useful information on many aspects of the ...

Re: Can I replace my fluorescent tube with LED tube?
I hope I’m not too late to join the discussions here, and to disagree with some of the comments above. I would like to first remind you some facts about luminescent lamps construction and SPECTRA. Whatever the content of the phosphors coating of the tube is, a fluorescent light source (mercury vapor...

Re: Adapting plants to the reverse cycle of seasons
I don't mind if some of them are North American, the prices are truly unbeatable.. Regarding the plant adaptation, as far as I know, the plants in general, have the ability to sense the environment and adjust their morphology, physiology and phenotype accordingly. Among the stimuli which plants perc...

Re: Adapting plants to the reverse cycle of seasons
Thank you Dan.. The plants were purchased from Pueblo Cactus, which is an Uruguayan nursery and dealer. I have no doubts about the origin of the plants, half of them are North American species, supposedly growth from seeds. I know the manager Ricardo Carbarini who is also an university professor and...

Re: Tap water vs. Distilled?
The pH*and the water-hardness ** are two totally different concepts! * The pH indicates the chemical activity of hydrogen ions – by measuring the pH value in a solution (in nature water is always a solution, it does not come as a pure substance) we can establish if that particular solution is acidic...

Thank you BobbyZ and Majcka for you warm welcome. My young collection is rapidly expanding and I will share pictures of the newcomers. Regarding Bobby's question, I'm almost 60-years old, and I do not study, but I teach and mainly do research in the field of Laser Physics and Technologies. Until rec...

Good afternoon everybody, I just registered. I live in Sofia, Bulgaria and I'm a Research Associate at Sofia University. I grow cacti since early 80s, and at the the beginning of 90s I used to have quite a decent collection of cacti, mainly growth from Haage seeds on my terrace. Then, after the demo...
