I will check the roots to make sure. Is there anything I can buy that's safe to spray it down with to kill that stuff off and to make sure its fully gone?

The cut looks good. It might discolour a bit, but it's sort of in the same way that an apple goes brown when you cut into it due to exposure to oxygen.
