Re: What could this be?
Thanks for the reply guys, I ended up cutting it down. Is there a certain way I should have it cut? I cut it to a point and its pretty well healed over now.

What could this be?
Hello guys, first off I would like to give a short history of the days leading up to the black discoloration. The cactus was in a low lit room for the winter and our first real nice day I put it out side on the deck where it got bright light and no direct sun. I left for the day and my landlord ende...

Re: Shriveling?
I will check the roots to make sure. Is there anything I can buy that's safe to spray it down with to kill that stuff off and to make sure its fully gone?

Shriveling?
My cactus has been shriveling up quite a bit lately, mostly all the older growth. Not sure exactly why as I've been watering it normally. :-k It's been growing like crazy since I got it about a year ago, It did have this little white fluffy sticky substance on it for awhile but appears to be going a...

Re: clestocactus strausii rot Help!
Thank you all for the replies,
now I'm a bit worried though, from what Dan has said. I will send a message off to Minime8484 and see what he thinks about it.

Re: clestocactus strausii rot Help!
Hmm that cut surface doesn't look too hot, but I'm sure it'll be fine. It looks dry, which is good. I'd say your other plant looks like a rooted cutting. :P The discolouration is probably fine. Yeah I wasn't so sure it was suppose to look like that, it is very dry though. Do you think it is just br...

Re: clestocactus strausii rot Help!
The cut looks good. It might discolour a bit, but it's sort of in the same way that an apple goes brown when you cut into it due to exposure to oxygen. Also, it probably means that you bruised the tissue a bit when cutting it. I think you used a serrated knife? A sharp single edged knife (or even b...

Re: Cacti or not?
Yes saw a few of those in Spain and they were all growing out white in the crown. No doubt it fools the punters into buying them and anyway most cacti from garden centres are bought almost like cut flowers on a whim and finish up in the bin within a few months anyway. That is quite sad really. They...

Re: Cacti or not?
The idea of painting them seems a bit strange. How do you suppose they would look once they started growing?
