Purchased at a local nursery, it is about 2 1/2 inches across and tall.

What could have caused this and should I lop it off?

It is a little thing in a 3" pot, and I believe may be an Echinocereus morricalii?

Don't know about the discoloration, but I'd say stapelia (technically a succulent, but not a cactus).

We used to have a dog that was MOST interested in the blooms.

Thanks! I did manage to snap a better photo of two of the flowers before they all closed up. 20150326_193154~2.jpg I am curious about what kind of soil these guys like. This thing is growing in really rich what looks like regular potting soil that does not drain freely, but cacti usually prefer some...

Three of the flowers developed and the rest look like they just disappeared back into the plant.
