Even though I withheld water during the winter, did I not keep it dark enough and am I stuck with that nub?

What could have caused this and should I lop it off?

It is a little thing in a 3" pot, and I believe may be an Echinocereus morricalii?

Don't know about the discoloration, but I'd say stapelia (technically a succulent, but not a cactus).

We used to have a dog that was MOST interested in the blooms.

Three of the flowers developed and the rest look like they just disappeared back into the plant.
