Re: What's going on with these cacti--something wrong? Echinocereus & Melo

Thanks for the advice, that's a good idea to check the roots, I think I'll do that soon. I repotted it sometime in the past year and moved it to a larger pot, maybe it's time to repot again. Would the pale color indicate it's not getting enough sun? Thanks also re: the melocactus, I'm relieved to he...

Re: What's going on with these cacti--something wrong? Echinocereus & Melo

Thank you for the advice! I did what you suggested and the whole white spot sort of flaked off in one piece, and there was some spider webbing above it, so I guess it was a spider egg case (I'd never seen one before!). I'm glad that was an easy solution! :) Any other tips on how I can make it better...

What's going on with these cacti--something wrong? Echinocereus & Melo

I have a few cacti I'm not sure what's going on--to my untrained eye, something looks a bit weird, but I'm not sure what (or even if) anything is actually wrong. What do you guys think? First up is this Echinocereus reichenbachii ssp. pailianus. I've had it about a year and a half--the color has alw...

Re: Can these cacti survive outside in the Florida rain?

thanks for the reply, those are some excellent ideas! I really like the look of the mini pop-up greenhouse and think that might work really well for what I'm planning, thanks for the suggestions! :D

Can these cacti survive outside in the Florida rain?

I'm thinking about moving several cacti into a mini-outdoor cactus garden and need some advice. I want to move a Mamm. hahniana, a melocactus, and an Echinocereus reichenbachii ssp pailianus to an urn outside on the patio. The Mamm. and melo aren't getting enough light where they are now, and the Ec...

Re: Melbourne, FL

I haven't been there myself, but judging from JMoney's post http://cactiguide.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=36195 Florida Cactus Inc. in Apopka, FL looks awesome! I found their facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Florida-Cactus/161078310579271 , looks like they're only open Mon-Fri (an...

Re: lithop help please--fulviceps 'aurea' and 'Fullergreen'

Thanks for the reply! Yes, they're both starting to separate in the middle--I'm hoping for flowers! :D But I wasn't sure if there was some rule of thumb re: don't water 'til after they've bloomed? And if they're a new pair of leaves, I'm not supposed to water until they turn into a papery shell, is ...

lithop help please--fulviceps 'aurea' and 'Fullergreen'

lithop beginner here--I have a L. fulviceps 'aurea' and L. julii ssp. fulleri v. fulleri 'Fullergreen' that are both starting to split open...what should I do about watering? (I haven't watered them in weeks, maybe even over a month, I don't know when to water/not water re: opening, blooming, etc.) ...

Re: what's going on with my Frithia pulchra?

update: I repotted it in a much smaller pot, waited a bit for it to adjust, then resumed watering, but nothing seemed to help. I guess it was already too late. It eventually withered away completely, stem by stem, within a few weeks. I'm wondering if those spots might have been a disease or somethin...

Re: what's going on with my Frithia pulchra?

I see! I was following the lithop watering approach (i.e., almost never, lol) so that's very interesting (and helpful!) to learn that Frithia need more water in summer. And you're right, here in Florida, we are still extremely hot and humid, no sign of Fall yet. :D I'll try watering it about once a ...

what's going on with my Frithia pulchra?

I bought this Frithia pulchra back in August, the first pic shows what it looked like when I first got it (I removed that one odd looking stem with the spots before planting it) The second photo shows it now...It's been about two months and it's not looking great--it seems to be shriveling up? I gav...

Re: Mamm. theresae etoliated/light issues?

Thanks very much for the replies. Hmm, the couple of times I've tried to cut off damaged cacti, it hasn't worked well (i.e., =cacti death), so I'm hesitant to try that. I think I see where to cut it, but may wait and do that if that's my only option. I did rotate it (which normally wouldn't do) and ...

Re: Mamm. theresae etoliated/light issues?

Thanks for the replies. Actually, that's not a shade cloth, but part of the window screen, so it's not quite that bad (but probably didn't help any).

So what happens now? Now that I've moved it to direct sunlight, will it in time return to a more normal color and compact shape?

Re: Mamm. theresae etoliated/light issues?

Thanks for the reply. I was concerned that this type of growth wasn't the "healthy" kind. But it was perfectly straight when I moved it a week ago, and today I was shocked to see how much it was leaning towards the window. You're correct, it receives several hours (I'd guess 4-5 at least) ...

Mamm. theresae etoliated/light issues?

I've had this Mamm. theresae for about 6 months--at first, it seemed to be doing well, and it bloomed 4 times in May-June, I was super excited. :D It's grown quite a bit, and I'm concerned it's etoliated (since that seems to be my problem--I'm in the process of relocating all my indoor/outdoor cacti...
