Re: Cactus identification?

Went to a (completely different) cactus nursery today that had several M. parkinsonii, and they looked pretty much exactly like this one, so I think I'm destined for disappointment in the M. varieaculeata category. But even if the flowers are not going to be pink, it's a pretty awesome little cactus...

Dumb question re: Mammillaria hahniana

I have a Mammillaria hahniana. I got it because it was wonderful and fuzzy — or at least, I thought it was pretty fuzzy. While I was at the cactus nursery today, they had several, and they are WAY FUZZIER than mine, and the fuzz was longer. I checked out the photos here on CactiGuide.com, and mine l...

Re: Best windowsill cacti?

"I would LOVE a Euphorbia, but with the nibbly cat I don't dare have one indoors." Pick the right Euphorbia and you will not have a nibbly cat problem for long!  But I love my nibbly cat, even if she is a butt sometimes. My friend Barbie in town has four cats. ( Nash's garden ...

Re: Best windowsill cacti?

One of the couple I've gotten so far is Echinopsis oxygona, since I have an Echinopsis hybrid that has done well for years (aside from my watering screw up this past year), so I was keeping an eye out for more. Glad to know it was a good choice! I'll look for the other two, though. Thanks for the su...

Re: Cactus identification?

Well, the second nursery gets them from any one of more than a dozen individual growers, so they have no idea, either. So I'm going to assume you guys are right and that it's M. parkinsonii for now, and just hope for pretty pink flowers instead of the yellowy-white ones if it blooms, lol. It's right...

Re: Cactus identification?

I called the nursery, and they got them from another nursery, which was not open today. lol. I'll try again later. It's probably M. parkinsonii, but I am holding out hope (mostly because I like the M. varieaculeata flowers better). And I agree, it was a really good find for the price regardless of w...

Re: Cactus identification?

Yeah, that's why I wasn't sure and wanted to ask! It does seem pretty unlikely I'd find one there, but stranger things have happened, and there were a lot of unusual-looking succulents and cacti from the same nursery (although, the only ones I could identify are common, it looks like, so they're pro...

Best windowsill cacti?

I will be going to a cactus nursery next weekend, and would like some ideas of what to get. I am growing indoors, and have a north facing window and an east facing window I can use, though the space on the east-facing window is limited at this point. I also have cats (obviously), one of which is ver...

Re: Cactus identification?

Hmm, it was on a shady shelf tucked back against the wall of the grocery store, under an overhang, for at least a few weeks (I eyed it for about a month before caving and buying it). I had it separated from my other plants for a week to make sure it had no pests, but I have it in an east-facing wind...

Cactus identification?

I found this guy at my local grocery store, with no identification. It was in great shape (very healthy, and surprisingly it was not sold in one of those awful peat clumps, although I ended up tossing the old soil since it was in a pot without a drainage hole and I had to re-pot anyway) and very che...

Re: Echinopsis: Is it a lost cause?

Thank you all so, so very much for your help! The roots are very clean, so I will re-pot her in the morning instead of waiting another day. While I don't have access to a greenhouse, I don't have air conditioning, so it gets pretty toasty warm in here! lol :D Now that I have her out of the pot, whil...

Re: Echinopsis: Is it a lost cause?

Okay, I ordered some sand and perlite and made a mix with approximately 40-50% the cactus soil I already had, 30-40% sand and 20-30% perlite. (I counted scoops, but they were all different sizes so that's not exact.) Hopefully that will be a better-draining mix. The cactus soil I had was the Miracle...
