Re: some of my hardy cacti and yuccas zone 6
My Opuntia fragilis has smaller pads and roots easy in spring or summer, not now. They can feel the season somehow, I think. That time roots appeared so strong that pads were pushed out of the ground where I stuck it in before. No problems, pads can wait till spring or some sun will shine on. May be...

Re: Oh no, summer's over!
I see this topic is still active and nobody is saying "The spring is behind the corner". But my Rebutia minuscula is showing that, almost in bloom: https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7528/16112365847_e2f2895fe7_c.jpg Or I just failed to provide to it cool enough spot where it could wait till r...
Re: Tenacity
I had a similar found at the west end of Anza Borrego Park. E. engelmannii & F. cylindraceus were growing in cracks of the same granite boulder. Who knows, might be spacey enough deep in the cracks...

Re: When do I uncover my seedlings?
Next year came. :) I usually keep plastic sealed for at least 3 months, but if I spot any problems - immidiately. And move to dry - wet regime, like for the grown up cacti. No temporarly opening - that just brings fungi inside the sterile media and that black stuff at the picture (peat or mold) is a...

Re: Parodia question
Thanks for the information Iann.Ididn't know that a cold dry winter could delay a plant to flower the following summer. Is that just regarding Parodia or other genera also? Parodia haselbergii normally blooms in late winter or early spring, so cold wintering and lack of sun would delay flowers for s...

Re: Hardiness depends on where you live
Oh, yes, should be tens or cacti species that survive in Dutch climate outdoors. My Opuntia polyacantha does even in a pot, at below -30 C. https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3837/14611918133_0d13172483_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3864/14393834038_85a1882fe7_b.jpg So does Escobaria vivipara in ...

I'm thinking: does someone need a greenhouse in Arizona at all? May be just some shade and shelter for his plants.

Re: Why do novices always use clay pots?
I still use some clay pots for some of my cacti. These do better aeration for soil and roots but dry out little faster then plastic ones. Just make some different watering for those plants. Also I painted some of those pots so they are not worse then other kinds, just are heavier and more breakable....

Re: Ferocactus viridescens sites
Hey, Barry, have you found some F. viridescens during your trip to San Diego? These cacti are almost everywhere in the wild areas of that city. I found some close to the Desert Garden of Balboa Park. https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2893/10393574916_bac06b4752_b.jpg https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2818...
