I often wonder just whether Astrophytum capricorne will be able to get its flowers through the spines to open, but they always do somehow.

Re: Germination question - Euphorbia, Aloe, Haworthia Rebuti
It's all too easy to blame yourself for any lack of success, but do you have any provenance on the seeds?

Re: Prickly Pear
I think that your Opuntia needs a good drink of water. Look at the pads, they seem to be dehydrated from the photo. The narrow neck of it's pot means that it will need something like 4" of water in the neck to give it 1" at the wide point. Does the pot have any drainage holes? In general, ...

Re: Greenknight's latest attempt
So far, with my limited attempts with Lithops from seeds, I've learned that they are very, very different to Cacti! Hardly surprising, they are a different genus from a different continent, so why should they be similar?

Re: What did I do right now?
Cool! They are such cool plants. I have a luethyi I got as a graft that I'm looking to degraft so I'm hoping to graft a tubercle then then degraft that once it grows so that way if I loose that one. I still have my main grafted plant. Does this seam feasible? Yes, totally feasible, but I would imag...

Re: M. luethyi--clusters rotting?
Steve, I don't quite understand (I'm a beginner, so pardon my ignorance 8-[)--I should cut the rotted stock off, cut the Luethyi off, let both dry and callous over, and then try to rejoin them? is that right? NO! That would be a very high risk strategy for a cacti beginner, but quite likely a good ...

Re: M. luethyi--clusters rotting?
Yes, not nearly enough sun. These are brown with the white tubercle ends almost touching when grown correctly. Maybe you allowed water to stand where the grafted parts were dense. I would cut some of the rotted stock off to see how deep it goes. With luck it will be very shallow. Wipe the wet areas ...

Spike s a Ferocactus something, Buffy is Mammillaria elongata, Willow is another Mammillaria, someone will be more specific soon and you are correct that Angel is an Aloe, again, soon someone will come along and be more specific.

Re: Turbinicarpus panarottoi
Okay, George, I'll take your 15 seeds, but I insist on trading you 4 for 1. So I'll send you 60 Turbinicarpus panarottoi seeds and I also have an unidentified Turbi that I'll send you too. I'll send you details by PM.
Anyone else fancy a trade, I have lots of T. pan seeds?

Turbinicarpus panarottoi
I have had a very successful crop of Turbinicarpus panarottoi seeds. These are true seeds from my own hand pollenated plants and not hybrids. Does anyone want to do a swap for Echinocactus horizonthalonius or Pseudolithos migiurtinus seeds? I also have Lophophora williamsii seeds if these are prefer...

Re: Steve's 2015 stuff
Here's a couple of pics of Lophophora williamsii seed collection. They don't have a lot of seeds in each pod. These gave 4, 5 & 10. http://i697.photobucket.com/albums/vv331/Stevec01_album/Cacti%20Guide%20stuff-%202015/P7031701.jpg http://i697.photobucket.com/albums/vv331/Stevec01_album/Cacti%20G...

Re: Steve's 2015 stuff
Germination on these very freshly harvested seeds has been good. I'll post a pic shortly and count up how many have germinated.Onzuka wrote:I'll sow these 66 seeds shown above, absolutely fresh, and report what happens.

Re: Steve's 2015 stuff
Here are a few more pics of my Astro grafts flowering for the first time. The first two pics are Ooibos. I've pollenated them and time will tell if I have succeeded. http://i697.photobucket.com/albums/vv331/Stevec01_album/Cacti%20Guide%20stuff-%202015/P7031695.jpg http://i697.photobucket.com/albums/...

Re: What was your first cactus ever?
Mine was an Opuntia cylindrica, the name is imprinted in my brain. That was in 1956 when I was 7 years old. I've moved on a bit since then.
