The Cactiguide Haworthia Thread

Post by C And D »

The all purpose Cactiguide Haworthia Thread is for any Haworthia Enthusiast to post photos, questions and information.

Facebook has an active Haworthia Group, but I really dislike Facebook so would much rather have a Haworthia Thread here on Cactiguide, and maybe we can get some of those Facebook people over here to see their goodies!

Don't let my photos intimidate anyone, any nice Haworthia photos are welcome
not just Hybrids.

Here are some of my new hybrids

"Zebra Toe" Mars hybrid with H. emelyae major

"Frosted Flakes" H. truncata with unknown (maybe pygmeae)

Unnamed, H. truncata v. crassa x H. springbokvlakensis

The crassa produces light green hybrids, that's were "Lime Green" comes from.
It took me a while to figure out what the other parent was until I looked closely at this H. jadea

Here are some of Steven Hammer's outstanding Haworthias that I took photos of in March 2009
Not sure if they have any special names.

Good morning dear Haworthia friends,

Summer 2012 I have photographed every plant after repotting.
July and August is a good time to repot, then the plants are in their summer rest.
The plants are having then hardly roots, they are formed mainly new after the summer rest.
Here I can show some, mainly botanical species.
The names and field numbers should be mostly correct. If anyone has corrections, any time!
The Taxonomy follows Dr.Ingo Breuer

Today some photos, more an occasional series, I had about 200 plants repotted.

Here we go. . .

Is this OK all squashed? I'm just pouring water over the top & hoping it trickles thru. Would rather not repot in anything bigger; running out of room for large pots. Thanks, Sue

It looks great Sue! These plants often are growing in the cracks of rocks in nature and make due just fine with very limited root space. Would it appreciate a bigger pot? Sure. But it isn't necessary as long as it keeps looking healthy. If it really does get too ridiculously big at some point just divide the plant and put the main division back in the pot. Then give away any pups you don't want.

My Haworthia cooperi v. truncata (the same as oldcat61's) is about the size of a basketball now.
I'm getting ready to take some new photos of it, maybe this weekend.

It spits off cuttings once in awhile.
They bloom every year, but the flowers are quite boring, and pretty much the same as any other Haworthia.

Sue, put it in a bigger pot and keep it growing, it looks like it could use some stronger light to keep it more compact.

Great plants K.W.

It looks like you use a mineral rich soil.

I was going to add a note about my Haworthia soil:
I use 95% pumice, it's pretty much the leanest soil I use for any plants in my collection.

Yes I use 100% mineral soil for all my plants - all my plants!!!
I use 85% pumice, 15% lava and zeolite (and a little white fermacell as color contrast. . .).

Well I did exaggerate a bit when I said my H. cooperi v. truncata was as big as a basketball
Maybe more of a Half a Soccer Ball
