Wow, that's a lot of asterias! What's the rational behind the drastic pruning of the roots?

Asterias is a heavy water drinker.
It grows with a reasonable speed when you fed water frequently in hot summer.
However this also gives more chance of rotting from tap roots.

I remove tap roots to minimize the rotting.

I normally repot 1 year old seedlings but 2 pots of miracle kabuto have been kept without the repotting as a trial.
Seeds were sown in 10 cm square pots on 25th October 2011.
As shown on the photo, overall growing is poor and sizes are varied.
Image
I divided them to 3 sizes and dumped smallest ones.
Image
Since tap roots has grow too well, I cut them off as usual.

I believe the repotting is a hard job but it can accelerate the growing speed each time.
I attach a reference photo showing miracle kabuto seedlings sown seeds on 23rd August 2013.
They were repotted twice, in 5 cm square tubes.

I potted miracle kabutos shown on the photo posted on 14th August.
Larger ones only, 15 seedlings in 5 cm square tubes
Since there was no root, the job was very easy.

My standard job of cutting tap roots is for 2 years old seedlings.

I cut 1 year old seedlings last year for a trial.
Since the trial result was acceptable level, I added more trials in this year.

Trial sumples:
Asterias cv miracle kabuto in 10 cm square pots
Sown seeds on 13th August 2015

Before repotting

Washed seedlings

After cutting tap roots
The size of seedlings are around 7 mm in diameter.
Since seedlings will go into wet potting mix, they will dry several days before that.

I have continued to repot mature plants.
They do not need to repot every year but I repot them when plants pushed pots out.

Since my all asterias cut tap roots when they were 2 years old, tap roots do not regrow shown on the photo.
