About Opuntia dillenii

Post by Justin »

Here:

http://www.cactiguide.com/cactus/?genus ... s=dillenii

I think in the first two photos are not Opuntia dillenii. (The second photo more because I assume it is a detail of the plant shown in the first photo.)
For me look like a spineless cultivar of Opuntia gomei. Maybe Opuntia gomei 'Old Mexico'. Maybe too well nourished with nutrients if I would to compare with others plants I've seen live in my area.
But I suppose that may be due to the living condition of the plant shown in photo (area, soil, climate, watering ...)

Pages on Opuntia Web

Nice work - and thanks for sharing. Looks like you are right!

Good to see the OPUNTIADS website has made progress. It's been a while since I visited that remarkable website.

Joe Shaw has sent me some detailed info on O. gomei and this page needs attention. Will be getting to it shortly, I hope!

Daiv,
I caution you that many of the names used on the Opuntiads site are not valid names for any Opuntia population and others such as O. dillenii are not well understood at present. Don't be in much of a hurry to adopt the names that Ferguson and others are trotting out because most of them are not accepted names.

I have been collecting cladodes from various non-restricted sites along the coast and I have given up attemping to ID sometimes I feel I have a O. dillenii or O. stricta and a O austrina They do well in my NE Florida garden and sometomes natives can do better. Hey one collected from in back of a garbage dumpster in Melbourne FL is flourishing with the rains and humidity. I loo for diverse spination and enjoy their uniqueness. I am happy that some exotics like my my baby sanat rita is developing pods from a single unrooted pad and my grizzly bear has dveloped a nice Mickey mouse structure from a single pad and is getting nice and hairy. Never the less I will keep on collecting natives and attempt some others for outdoor diversity.
