is this the beginning of roots or some kind of fungus?

Post by Zemie »

Today I was taking some leaves to propagate my echeveria and I noticed one of them had this weird little doodad on it. I've never propagated a plant before so I don't know what exactly it is, so yeah basically the title says it all, is this what little baby roots look like? There isn't any of this stuff on the main plant and I didn't think the leaves grew roots on spots besides where they attached to the plant

If it's an Echevaria I would think it is roots as it is not fungus in this enlargement. Before I read your post I thought it was a cactus since it looked like an areole with tiny spines, but Echeverias like all Other Succulents don't have areoles.

If you scroll right down this link you will see an Echevaria leaf cutting putting out roots from a circled area higher up the leaf like yours, even though as said they usually come from the cut surface.
