Baby Cactus - How do I remove?

Post by Briscactus »

One of my cacti has been growing a little version of itself for the past few months and I'd like to know how or if I should remove the baby then how to ensure it takes root. The baby can be seen in the top of the photo.

I see this is a Notocactus (Parodia) plant that can hold this offset for long time if not permanently. Sometimes after contracting and expanding the body of the cactus that "baby" could be rejected aside of the main stem. If you really want another plant of this kind you have to cut that offset off using sharp tool. Then wait for the wound to heal, get dry for some days, week. Set the young plant in a shady spot over a container with sand, soil, vermiculite, zeolite or so and do occasional moisturizing of that plant and surface until roots appear. That can be after weeks or months, just be patient.
If your cacti mess in your job just forget about the job.

Geoerge's advice is good.
Personally, I'd be tempted to leave the offset in place - over time you will get a large impressive clustered plant.
