Echinomastus and Orange Rot

I like growing E. johnsonii plants and letting nature water the plants that are growing in clay pots. The area that I live in is very similar to where the plants originate, but get about an average of 15 inches of rain per year compared to 5 inches. The difference is one is grown the ground and the other is grown in clay pots. The other problem is dew from the ocean air which increases the water that the plants can absorb. I grow many plants that come from arid regions and do not have to water them very much. I also know that there are some plants that I cannot grow at all.
