What could this be?

Post by CarefreeHWY »

Hello guys, first off I would like to give a short history of the days leading up to the black discoloration. The cactus was in a low lit room for the winter and our first real nice day I put it out side on the deck where it got bright light and no direct sun. I left for the day and my landlord ended up coming by the stain the deck and moved it to the driveway where it got full sun exposure all afternoon.

A few days later we moved the plant to our new place which was a 2 hour drive away (we were moving out at the end of may) and I had it sitting down on the backseat.

The next night it went down to 0 degrees C and there was frost. It was in an unheated sun room.

It has been through a lot the last few weeks to say the least. what I am wondering is what is wrong with it, is it sun burnt or bruised or damaged from the cold?
If so is there something I can do, maybe I have to cut the top dead area off?
Thank you in advance!

I think your guess is correct, cut it back before the thinner part, if you want. :)

Sunburn would be mostly on one side, the side that faced south. If it's all around, it's frost damage. Yes, I think I'd cut that part off.

Dark is usually cold, white is sunburn, so a first guess would be from the cold

Thanks for the reply guys, I ended up cutting it down. Is there a certain way I should have it cut? I cut it to a point and its pretty well healed over now.

That's fine. Generally best to cut at an angle so it doesn't form a "cup" that could hold water, sounds like you accomplished that goal.
