I'm sure this kind of thread pops up all the time, but here it goes...
I bought a monstrose T. bridgessi from an ebay seller not too long ago that had some coarse grit at the top of the soil. Today some got knocked away and I noticed a brown patch on my new beautiful (ugly) cactus. After extirpating the cactus it looks to be a quarter-sized patch of rot at the base. It is not soft to the touch which makes me feel a little better, but I'm still worried that I'm going to lose it after only having the thing for two weeks.
What can I be doing about this to try to save the plant? Do I need to cut that area out or leave it alone since it isn't soft? I'm already repotting it in a much more inorganic soil mix, it came to me in that potting soil-looking mix.
Another rot post (sorry!)

It looks like you could cut off the parts that aren't black/brown and let the end callus over for a while and then root it.
