How long does it take for a plant to recover from sunburn after being protected by shade?

That might never recover. I suspect that some parts at least will be permanently scarred. Probably not fatal, but ugly.

The lighter areas? I was under the impression that if you catch it early, that it could recover.

You didn't catch it early enough ;) Anyway, you'll know for sure in a few weeks.

I'd expect it to branch and clump in time. So while you may never be rid of damage on those stems the overall plant will look fine in time. Probably reaching the point where you could remove the damaged stems altogether.
