Do you think this simply corking?

Sure. These are notorious for it. You can reduce it to a minimum by sufficient watering and feeding, and using a reasonably rich (for a desert cactus) soil.

You can also put rocks around it to hide it - not a bad idea anyway, holds the soil in place and prevents crusting, plus it looks good.
