Three cacti, what's wrong with them?

Post by MartP »

Okay, so I have three cacti that aren't doing that good - or are they doing fine?
I tried to take as good pictures as possible! They're also all repotted already to bigger pots, two were potbound.

Looks like an Echinocactus grusonii intertextus, but I'm not sure.

Yes, the brown area with a little bit of white worries me, it is on every side of cactus. I'd think this is just corking since it's an old cactus, but his roots weren't doing so good when being repotted (NOT potbound) and the little white spots with brown circle around them are strange.

This one's an old man cactus, but I don't know the exact species. Also repotted, and it was (a bit) potbound.
There's a strange area at the bottom of cactus, everything else seems fine. Looks like a spider had made a nest there, since I saw one little spider. Is the spider the reason the "hairs" are brown, is it normal or should I be worried?

Last cactus, NO idea what it is. Seems like just corking to me. I repotted the cactus too, it was potbound a bit and difficult to remove.

I hope someone will know what's wrong, if anything is wrong.

#1 could be the beginning rot, or burn? #2 looks like rot, too much water. #3 I'm thinking the same as number one.

Is it squishy? If it is it could be a strong indicator of rot.

MY mistake, I forgot to say, It's completely hard, just like any other part of the cacti. I doubt it's rot, because it's healthy inside, and has good roots.

Number 3 photo looks like Espostoopsis dybowskii. I had one of these very similar to yours. I killed it pretty quickly but the way it died does look like your as well with sort of soggy looking fluff at the bottom. I did try cutting it to find a rot free portion but it had gone right up inside to the growth tip. I am not saying yours is dead or dying just that it looks similar to how my one pegged it, I would definitely wait for further responses on that one as I am not great with Brazilian/tropical species there are better experts here. The others though, if they are hard on the brown bits, are most likely fine. As they age the green is replaced with woody looking colours which is called corking, this is quite normal but can be accelerated with too much sun or less than perfect growing conditions as the plant hardens up to cope.
And as the walls come down and as I look in your eyes
My fear begins to fade recalling all of the times
I have died and will die.
It's all right.
I dont mind
I dont mind.
I DONT MIND

I know about corking, but I'm suspicious because it does not seem normal, especially on #1.
#2 cactus was doing great, at first there was only one, but then it reproduced into many (7 currently) . It does not seem like overwatering or rot to me, since it's also hard, even harder than other hairs. Maybe IT IS just corking or maybe it took a bit of colour from earth, or maybe there wasn't enough sun right there?
I'll keep an eye on them all, and be checking if it's going worse or becoming better.
I'm still highly suspicious about #1.

I also must say (didn't say, again!!), the cactus #1 has tiny webs above the soil.

Espostoopsis dybowskii seems to be doing better now. The hairs are still dark but getting lighter every day. The other two are staying the same.

The echinocactus grusooni seems to be doing worse now... the brown area is now turning yellow, but it's still hard and not soft...

H, what soil mix are they in ? The inner pot needs taking out of the outer pot because that will not let the water drain away and they will sit in wet. They do look like they are rotting to me also.

I repotted them and the water drains fine, their roots are healthy or so it seemed.
