Hello from singapore !

Cactus newbies here in desperate need of some help. We became parent to a two beautiful cacti last October.
A cereus and a golden barrel. Both grown indoors, close to but not directly by a large sunny window.

We lost the cereus this july when the weather turned rainy (every day) and the humidity was very high.
It developed some oval shaped black spots and some irregular dark brownish ones, which we believe were fungal.
Despite our best efforts, it succumbed and even cuttings taken well away from the sick parts, eventually developed the same spots and rotted as well.

For fear that our barrel cactus would suffer the same fate, we stopped watering it. the weather got better in august. But to be safe, we decided not to water at all that month either. We read through many articles and blogs that warned against watering during wintering months (tho' Singapore does not technically have a winter), so we thought it would be alright.

But just this night, we noticed a dark area on one of its ribs. And after closer inspection, yellowing (and shrivelling?) along the edges of all the ribs.
The spines from the base up have also turned brown. the crown however, appears healthy.

Did we do something wrong? Is it dehydrated ? Or is it also developing an infection of some kind? Can it be saved?
Please, please could you have a look at the photos and advise us what best to do.
We love it so much and are distraught at the prospect of losing our baby.

Kindest regards,
elaine and christopher.

Might be a touch scorched by the sun? Rot doesn't usually start on the ribs and the plants is still green between them. The brown doesn't look nice though.

Are the yellow bits very soft? Keep an eye on the base for signs of rot.

Hi Ian,

Thanks for the quick response. The yellow bits aren't soft, although the brown bit is soft (not a squishy wet kind of soft, but more like it's hollow)

The cactus is about 3m from the window and it's only sunny for half the day so it might not be scorching. We're worried it's fungus as our other cactus (the cereus) got infected and died.
