I tried to save this scion from a rotting stock by grafting onto another stock, but that obviously failed. Any idea what the black stuff is? It is powdery, like a finely-ground coffee.

So my previous stock wasn't rotting, but moldy?

How do you treat mold?

I'd guess that the mold is the result of the scion decomposing. Though if the knife you used wasn't sterilized very well then perhaps it may have contaminated the graft. You can slice the moldy part off the top of the stock, discard it, and place the stock in an area with good airflow, maybe dust a bit of sulfur powder on the cut. Graft again another day.

Thanks!

That's what I did with the stock, so more experimenting and learning for another day.
