Why is this Ferocactus pink?

Why is this Ferocactus pink?
It's a F. townsendianus. It's obviously not in the best health but the color is really weird.

I should mention that the flesh is still firm to the touch, but not hard like one would expect if it was dying.

My guess is that it is close to death, and the green chlorophyll have died off leaving just the red pigments, like the leaves of a deciduous tree in Autumn.

Too much sun or heat? How the roots are, these look weak for me.
If your cacti mess in your job just forget about the job.

I don't know if this will work, but I tried grafting it to see if that would help it.
