Unknown pest

Post by Pricky »

Can you help me identify this pest that i found on some of my pereskiopsis? They are really small(<5mm).
The sick pereskiopsis had on the top side of some leaves a white coat and the bottom sides were consumed and presented little black round things (eggs?).
I sprayed them with dimethoate.

This insect is known a thrips, insect family Thysanoptera. You can read about it by clicking on the tab at the top of the homepage called "Pests and Diseases" and then clicking on the "thrips" name under the headline "Insects and Critters". Thrips are in my opinion not the worst insect pests attacking cacti (mealybugs and scale insects are harder to combat and more destructive), but they are also not easily defeated. The best treatment is a systemic insecticide. Some of these will be effective for up to one year.

Thanks for the help! Dimethoate is a systemic that is absorbed through foliage.
