Sick barrel cactus

So I have a sentimental attachment to this cactus and want to do whatever I can to keep it alive. It recently got rot so I had to cut about half of it away. It now looks like the side is getting rot too. Can I cut this away as well? Basically cutting the barrel cactus in half vertically. Should I cut it away? I have no idea how small a cactus can get.

Only way you might save anything would be to graft tubercles on another cactus.
