Knowing your whereabouts might just narrow it down to a select few species.

I believe stefans bug identification is correct. I read about the species and believe they shouldn't do any harm for your plants. They should be eating other bugs because they are flesh eating predators. In my native language we call these kind of bugs "beast bugs". So I'd like to say lucky you, you got natural pest contor patrol!

They eat millipedes though.....There could be a millipede nearby, or they could be hunting other quarry...

Best not to bother them. Let them eat aphids or whatever- they are predatory. Some have a nasty bite though.

Millipedes are completely harmless. They eat decaying organic materials like dead leaves. So this can be an indicator of high organic content in the soil.
There are more cacti in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.

Actually some species can hurt the plant by eating the roots. Millipedes can burrow in the soil and find the roots. But yeah primarly they eat decaying organic materials. Lets hope there is not a root eating one around!

Pompom well, its in south africa, so the species range could be more diverse than what we face here in europe.

Not sure which one of these the assassin bugs "assassinate" or which one of these eats roots.
