I had this happen to me once on a pachycereus where it got a sun burn. Never payed much attention to it until it spread to the whole plant and killed it. So i'd keep a close eye on it if it spreads. If it does, cut it asap.

At first it was slow with spots appearing all over but then in one week the whole cactus was covered and i could only save a couple of inches out of a foot and the infection moved to the cutting i took too.
I'm not saying to cut now, only if it starts to spread.
In my case taking a cutting was pointless. Although it was completely green, new growth had the black spotting so the pathogen must have spread all over it.

Agreed. I had my Echinocereus pentalophus sunburn on a few stems in a sudden early hot spell. The sunburned areas turned black - but only the sunburned part. The black part shriveled up, but the tips, which hadn't burned, continued to grow. Since this is a trailing species, once the dead areas had completely dried up and there was clearly no rot I pressed the healthy ends down against the soil and pinned them there with rocks so they would root down. It's working, too. I could have cut them, but this way there was no interruption in their growth.

Do watch it closely, because rot can set in to the damaged area, but the sunburned area turning black is normal.
