Crazy Bunny spots Opuntia

Post by Jerjr »

I’m not sure if I’ve just never noticed these before or if they’re new. I’m going to monitor to see if they’re growing at all. But in the meantime, does anyone know what it might be?

To me that looks like some old mechanical injury of feeding damage from an insect. The grayish spots seem to be made up of a detached epidermal layer. Perhaps a leaf mining insect was feeding at that location. There are flies and also tiny moths, whose larvae will tunnel right underneath the top layer of the cactus skin.

Thank you for your response!
I’ve been keeping an eye on it and it doesn’t seem to be changing any.
