Evil Fishhook-Spined Cacti?

Post by Shelilla »

My dad bought these two cacti yesterday because as it turns out he's a big fan of cacti. He felt sorry for one because it was so tall and leaning in a tiny pot barely wider than the base. The other one I like as well is this cute furry devil one with lovely red spines.

Here they are. I can try to find out what they are but I know it'll take a heck of a lot longer than just asking some cacti professionals ;)

This one is so mean. Not only are it's spines long and hooked, but they face different directions as though it just wants to rip off half your skin lol.

The top of the first one looks a bit like Mammillaria senilis but the rest...?
The second is an Oreocereus celsianus or trollii

The first cactus is a Mammillaria but not M. senilis ("Mammillopsis senilis").

The first can be Mammillaria rekoi leptacantha, even shape of the stem and spines are not typical...

Yes, I was looking through many cacti and Mammillaria species to the point where I got a headache and my eyes were strained lol and still, none of them looked remotely like it. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll check it out now.
Also, my dad bought that cacti not because he liked it (it is very vicious) but because he felt sorry for it. It was growing in a pot just a few millimeters wider than the bottom stem and the whole thing was wobbly and unstable with this big top coming out of a tiny base and cramped roots. This may have effected why it grew in this way?

Since you bothered to repot it, you sould have knocked all the old soil from the roots and plant it in a fast draing mostly mineral mix. It will save you lots of problems later
