Group trip to Florence

Post by peterb »

Tom and Eric from the CACSS along with Doug Dawson and Woody Minnich and I went out to Florence and environs today. I am usually a hermit when I go to habitat, but it was fun going with other folks today.

A young crested saguaro and a variegated saguaro on the same day. Haven't seen a variegated saguaro before, very cool. Some of the photos came out slightly odd.

The recently restored Pinal County Courthouse in Florence:

From a distance we thought this might actually be a real, dead coyote:

Much more cuddly than that:

Woody's high tech sun shade. :-)

Crested saguaro. It's pictured here on the Guide from a couple years ago but I can't find that thread right now:

Lots of photos of the acunensis, too, but I've posted plenty of those already. Some interesting chollas that I'll post separately.

Wow those are some odd saguaros. The variegated one is interesting. I didn't know they could be variegated but all plants can I suppose.

The crested ones are neat too. I found one in habitat, which I think is one of the coolest things I have ever found in habitat before. :)

That variegated Saguaro is neat. It would be fun to got back and check it in another 30 years. I wonder if they can grow that big or if variegated plants have a tough time living that long?

Wow, nice find on the variegated Saguaro.

I bet with Doug and Woody along, there was no lack of conversation 8)

(I say that in brotherly jest, both Doug and Woody are great guys!)

ha, yes Doug and Woody were very enjoyable company. I heard many stories of various trips, all of which made me extremely jealous.

I was wondering the same thing about the variegated saguaro. I have a feeling that they might get into trouble when they get bigger. Those are some pretty large areas of variegation. But then again, I am not expert at all!

I do like variegated forms as if I haven't let everyone know this already!

I know it's an old post, but has anyone gone to check on the variegated saguaro yet? It's been a couple years and it would be nice to see how it's doing.
There is no cactus you can't eat, but you just might regret it if you eat the wrong one.
