Mamm flowers

Post by CelticRose »

My M. gracilis graced me with a flower today. :) It was rainy today and the plant is still sitting out of direct sunlight after being repotted, so the flower didn't open all the way. Sorry the flower is blurry -- for some reason the camera wanted to focus on the spines.

My M. rhodantha had three flowers yesterday. :D That's the most it's ever had at one time.

Thanks, Moonbeam. :)

I can't wait till I get to see one open all the way on the M. gracilis. It's got several more buds.

Thats nice Celtic Rose. :D My Mamms don't flower until Spring or Summer so I guess that I am just going to have to wait for mine. to flower.

Thanks, Saguaro123. :) I was lucky enough to find a couple of fall and winter bloomers. My other Mamm (bombycina) doesn't flower until summer, I think, so I have to wait too.

There is not a day in the year when I don't have a species of Mamm in flower somewhere in the g/h, that's one of the bonuses with growing the genus.

These two are doing well Celtic Rose, I see rhodantha has more buds coming on.

Well, when you have as many as you do...

Thanks, CP.

The rhodantha has been flowering continously since the last time I posted about it. :)

The gracilis has two flowers open this morning! :D No time to post the pics right now -- I'll post them this evening.

The pics are pretty good. Some of the photo-buffs here will know better, but I think the camera auto focus selects the spines because they are higher contrast than the flower. I have the same trouble in those situations and often resort to manual focus or use auto-focus on the spines, lock it and move back to get the flower in focus.

Thanks, everyone. :)

I managed to get better pics for these, but I think it's time to read the manual for my camera again.

There were two flowers on the M. gracilis this morning. :D

This is a little overexposed, but you can see that they had opened a little more this evening. :)

This got me wondering about something. What's the situation about a plant commonly sold as M. gracilis var. fragilis (or should it be M. veluta ssp. gracilis var. fragilis)?

It should be M. veluta ssp. gracilis var. fragilis. M. gracilis var. fragilis is listed as a synonym -- I've been using M. gracilis to save wear and tear on my typing fingers.

I didn't really understand the question. What do you mean by situation?

For such a sweet innocent-looking plant, it sure bites! :P I've been bitten more by this plant than by any of my other cacti.

With situation I mean: is it a different plant than the "normal" gracilis? I've had fragilis and plain gracilis from different sources and there wasn't any conclusive difference... I heard a lot of people don't recognize fragilis as being anything but a made-up name for an extreme form of gracilis. What's the current status on this?
