Hanazono's cactus 2011

Post by Hanazono »

The summer solstice passed and daytime became a bit shorter. The sunset was around 8:00 pm yesterday. Many Discocactus were in flower after sunset.
The photo is Discocactus heptacanthus v griseus.
I bought seeds and sowed them 11th August 2006. I grafted seedlings and degrafted in 2009.
I do not know why but plants, germinated from a seed packet show a slightly different appearance.

I collected seeds from my plants. The photo is one year old seedlings.

Nice Flower! Reminds me of those "Trees" my dad used to make with Rolled up Newspaper that was shredded.

So white!
Nice seedlings too!

Yes daylight time has been shorter.
We use the winter-time(1 hour late) from this week.
I removed shadecloth covered over rooftop on 21st March. Maximaum temperature was 23 'C yesterday and inside temperature of my greenhouse reached to 40 'C.
2 more Ariocarpus were in flower.

I too love those Ariocarpus spp. plants. The big problem though is, I have a tough time keeping them alive, especially if they are still small.

Absolutely stunning collection of Ariocarpus and beautifully photographed, too. I wonder if maybe the unnamed trigonus type might be what used to be called Ariocarpus confusus? (One of the aramberri plants?)

The hybrids are amazing. The scaphirostrus is incredible. Everything is just fantastic, thanks for sharing.

Yes Ariocarpus seedlings are grown very slowly.
I sow prenty of seeds collected from own plants every year. Some of them die but survive also many.
If you kept seedling in shade and fed water a lot in summer, seedlings would grow a reasonable speed.

Peterb
Thanks for commenting on the unknown Ariocarpus.
It is happend simmilar problem sometimes when you bought seeds from others.

Indian summer has been continued in here. The maximum temperature will reach to 27 'C today.
Several more Ariocarpus were in flower yeasterday.
