Ferocactus wislizenii ajoensis

Post by peterb »

This may be the only infraspecific name for the wislizenii clan, and will almost certainly not be recognized by more strict taxonomists. But it's interesting to me that the very long spined form of wislizenii now has a name. This form has often caught my eye in Florence, down through Casa Grande, to the Ajo area. The spines are just fantastic.

Attached is a pic I took in Florence that is it, I think.

Sounds good, and they definitely look different from the usual wislizenii. Does that variety/strain (named after Ajo?) dominate those areas, or is it sporadic?

Interesting plant, Tony. The Czech photos show dark red flowers but flower color is variable on wislizenii anyway.

Greg, the form seems sporadic and intermixed with more standard wislizenii, to me. I'll have to pay closer attention.

If it's sporadic and mixed in with the normal population it is possibly only natural variation and does not deserve a separate name? If it was a discrete population away from the normal one maybe.

Getting more info from Rob Romero and it looks like ajoensis is not only a long spined wiz, but has some other distinct characters. Going to see one this weekend maybe will post pics.

Another possible infraspecific name is Ferocactus wislizeni f. flavispinus

If it blooms at a different time it could be intermingled and a distinct subspecies.

I am told the real ajoensis flowers earlier than wislizenii. More info on the way.

Waterman mountains are about 60 miles east of Ajo and 40 miles south of Florence.

I totally forgot about this thread. Attached are a couple of photos of a confirmed ajoensis, from AZ 86 between Why and Tucson. I have been exploring a whole stretch of similar Feros in Sonora, also, extending the original range significantly south and west. (if the Sonora Feros are indeed ajoensis; jury is still out. As one hears often with cacti: more research needs to be done.)
