Anyone Had Experience With These Heaters?

Post by Tiggy »

Has anyone had any experience with these types of haters for the greenhouse? If yes would you recommend one or the other? I am looking for something better than the paraffin heater that I used last year, but at the same time will not cost a fortune to run. Bearing in mind my greenhouse is only 2mx1m I am wondering if I could get away with using something like this to keep the temps. at least between 5-7c. I was considering a gas one but think it would be too powerful for such a small space. Any opinions or advice welcome.

They used to use electric tubular heaters for greenhouses in the UK quite a lot until fan heaters took over for larger greenhouses. It depends how much you slosh water about Susi whether the house or conservatory type will do or if specialist waterproof greenhouse ones are needed:-

If you have a small one on a thermostat it should be OK for your little greenhouse and not get too hot.

I'm using an electric oscillating heater in my GH & am very pleased with it. My GH is about 13ft by 8.5ft & it was down to 28F here last night. I've been keeping the temp around 60F at night until the zygos are done blooming, & then plan to gradually let it go down to 50F. I got mine at Home Depot http://www.homedepot.com/p/Lasko-23-in- ... n4yiP4o69I" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. When I water I just turn it off & put a plastic bucket over it. Very quiet & the oscillating feature seems to keep the temps even out to the corners. I figure the air movement is a good thing. Sue

Dave- Since posting this topic I have purchased one of these tube heaters, time will tell if it will be successful. Thus far it has come into action maybe three times when the temps. dropped at night. This week it has kicked in twice already and will definitely be in use tonight as the prevision is 2c. low taking into account the wind chill, and there is certainly a wind chill tonight. Been a beautiful day but the wind has now got up and it feels like "brass monkey" weather out there at the moment. The prevision of 2c. is for the village down below which is 400m. lower than us so I'll see how the heater copes tonight. I hope it copes as I have three beautiful Epiphyllums just beginning to flower. On the whole I am quite optimistic and I could always buy another smaller one if I find that it needs a bit of help. Mine 3ft. long and uses 180Watts. last year I was spending 50euros per month just for paraffin.

Oldcat- As you will see from the above post, I now own one of these tube heaters, I bought it on ebay but it came from England. I'm very pleased with it up to now and it should be quite economical too. Yours sound a good option too especially if you have a larger gh. Mine is tiny so hopefully this will prove adequate.
