Rooting cacti in water
Rooting cacti in water
Has anyone tried this? The only cactus I have done this with is Pereskiopsis and it works pretty well. Also I know that other plants when rooted in water produce "water roots" that are useless in soil, making the effort of rooting them in water futile. Is this the case with cacti?
Say no to drugs, say yes to cacti

I think most cacti could sucumb to rot if you do the same that you do with Pereskiopsis. But I think humidity might encourage rooting, but not intense humidity all the time.

Around 10 years ago I tested hydroponics for cacti propagation.
Hylocereus and Hrrisia stocks were used for rooting trial.
Stocks were not submerged in water, lifted 10 mm from the meniscus.
One end of tissue paper was hooked on the bottom of stocks and other end was in the water.
Roots started to develop in 2 weeks and grew along the tissue paper.
The tissue paper disappeared in a month and roots continued to grow in the water.
A simple hydroponics kit for cacti is available in market in Japan.
