Thought I'd share a pic of some Rhipsalis (not sure of species) I grafted onto Pereskiopsis, 2-3 months after grafting.

Here it is 6 weeks later (the first pic was a little old when I posted it). This is even after a large piece was knocked off during a move.

It's polyacrylamide gel. Miracle-Gro sells it as "water storing crystals". It's touted as a soil additive to "prevent over- and underwatering", but I just like to root things in it.

It's just like rooting them in water, really. I don't know if there's any advantage.
As far as good places to get cacti here, I don't know of any, but I don't get out much. Most of my nicer cacti are mail-ordered.
