Propagation Ariocarpus fom seed
Re: Propagation Ariocarpus fom seed
Ariocarpus seedlings grow with a reasonable speed under the condition of high humidity and soft sunlight as same as any cacti seedlings.
This condition gives rotting problems on seedlings possibly.
The rotting of Ariocarpus seedlings start from the joint of tap root and tubercles normally.
I lift the joint up from the top soil and try to minimize the rotting.

Re: Propagation Ariocarpus fom seed
wow, Hanazono, you got so many seedlings. i am in awe. drooling actually.
i just want to know how did you get so high germination rate.. what type of soil mixture you used, any special treatment you observed as to lighting, watering, etc etc.
thanks and i'll be following your steps.

Re: Propagation Ariocarpus fom seed
The freshness of seeds is key of germination rate for Ariocarpus.
Within 1 year from the harvest shows a good germination rate.
Within 2 years will be a acceptable level and 3 years will show a poor result.
I keep seeds in a fridge.
Seeds are harvested from my plants by myself.
I use a heating pad for the germination process.
Potting-mix:
Organic base seed rising mix-1
~2 mm clay grain-1
~2 mm zeolite-1
~2 mm scoria-1
coarse sand-1
Top dressing:
2~4 mm zeolite
Fungicide:
Yes used, spray over potting mix and sown seeds
Temperature:
30 C' at the top of potting mix
There is 3 C' differential temperature between the heating pad and top of potting mix and so I set 33 C' on the heating pad.
Light:
Natural, no artificial light
Germination process time:
2 weeks
The germination of Ariocarpus seeds will complete in 2 weeks.
Seeding pots are removed from the heating pad and moved into a wet-box (plastic box, a capillary mat is laid on the bottom).
Seedlings will be in the wet-box for 2~3 years.
Water over the capillary mat, not over seedlings.

Thank you for sharing.
Can Ariocarpus be grafted?
Can Ariocarpus be grafted?
Have a good day!
Re: Propagation Ariocarpus fom seed
Yes, Ariocarpus seedlings can be grafted.
I graft more than 100 seedlings onto Pereskiopsis stocks every year.
I will start the grafting next month for this season.

These 2 pads were posted on 27th March 2016.
You can see how much seedlings have grown since.

Re: Propagation Ariocarpus fom seed
I made the mistake of thinking that my Ariocarpus seedlings would like it drier and sunnier than most species and they rewarded me by turning rather pink (red). I think it's probably what one might describe as sunburn. They have not grown very much this year as I have still been watering quite sparingly. If I water more generously next year and keep out of full sun do you think they will recover?
Re: Propagation Ariocarpus fom seed
I think each person has different opinion but:
Reddish seedlings have received too strong sunlight.
They will stop or reduce the growing speed.
Any seedlings including Ariocarpus need soft sunlight.
I set Ariocarpus to receive softer sunlight compared to Astrophytum and Mammillaria even mature plants.
It is not shown on the seedling photos but each pad has a small shady cover.
The cover is shown on the photo posted on 29th Feb 2016.
Reddish color will recover easily when you reduced the strength of sunlight.

Re: Propagation Ariocarpus fom seed
nice seedlings you have there Hanazono.
My experience with growing ariocarpus and astrophytum from seed results in about 2-3 month old seedlings suddenly turning transparent and mushy. Is this too much moisture? thanks
