Haworthia dormancy
Haworthia dormancy
About two months ago I purchased some Haworthias and while doing research I've found out that some, including some of the ones I have to dormant during the summer and grow during autumn and winter. In the tropics we don't get autumn and winter just a dry and wet season, will my plants go dormant during the dry season and only grow during the rainy season?

Re: Haworthia dormancy
At what specific temperatures do they do so?

I don't think there's a precise answer. Here's a discussion that explains it pretty well - http://forums.gardenweb.com/discussions ... a-dormancy

Thanks for the link!
Re: Haworthia dormancy
Mine grow well at about 15 - 20 C and go dormant at 25 - 30 C. In the middle - it will depend on the species, sunshine, other factors.
If your cacti mess in your job just forget about the job.
°C = (°F - 32)/1.8
°C = (°F - 32)/1.8

Thanks for the answer but in the tropics day time temperatures rarely ever get to 20° , what now?
The species I have are the usual ones you see in garden centers.

Thanks

Most Haworthias are going to be tricky in the tropics. There are some summer-growing species, but even they are really set up for hot days and cool nights.

My Haworthias grow all year round. I've never noticed any difference. Some are in bloom now (summer , very hot even at night). I have never had any difficulty with this genus. They grow and form clumps very quickly and they are always fine no matter if it is sun or shade and wet or dry... Easiest plants for me...although I have only the most common species.

Thanks for sharing you information as we have similar climates and finding this information online is very difficult.

Yes, it is not easy to find this kind of information. Most of the literature is from\to northern hemisphere growers. For example, when you read something like "keep dry from October to February" you have to "translate" it to the southern hemisphere.Salazar wrote:Thanks for sharing you information as we have similar climates and finding this information online is very difficult.

I have little experience but I've noticed that most of the advices about plant dormancy, and winter/summer growers simply don't work for me. Most of my plants will never go dormant, at least in a visible fashion, except for the Bowiea volubilis and Pachypodium, whose leaves are droped.

I'm from a tropical country, I noticed that my haworthias grew significantly Dec-Jan. I guess it also depends which nursery your haworthias came from, they might have acclimatized already
