Goings on down under

Post by MikeInOz »

Some of my seedlings from last season. They are 11 months old..Some of the seeds had very poor germination, some very good!
I've kept them warm all winter to keep them moving. Excuse the out of focus pics. I will do better next time...

You do have some nice and healthy plants and those new seedling plants are also in top shape! With all those new plants, you will soon have to add another greenhouse! :) What kind of prickly pear (Opuntia sp.) are you sprouting there? Members of that genus can become rather large and produce an awful lot of biomass.

Thanks Harold. Those are basilaris. I also sowed some last year but these are more vigorous. I sowed some sana rits and some aciculata but nothing yet.
I did nick each seed before sowing.

I do have one pretty large O. aciculata and am trying to get an Opuntia basilaris established. For some to me unknown reason, the O. basilaris gives me trouble. I placed a cladode into the ground and for several years it did not produce another pad. Instead, the pad I tried to root shriveled up from its side. When we had a very severe cold snap, with temperatures not exceeding 32 degrees Fahrenheit for three full days, what was left of the initial pad died all the way. Opuntia Santa Rita is a prickly pear, which is popular here, because its cladodes turn a purplish color when the weather gets cold during our winters.

Looking good, Mike! I'm impressed with the seedling successes. My determination to not indulge in germinating cactus from seeds is weakening. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Mike
No but it's a polly tunnel with side walls. About 30 meters (yards) long and 6 wide but it's crammed full of all kinds of things not just cacti. I also have a heated glasshouse for orchids and other tropicals.
