New cacti
I went shopping for new plants yesterday.
I've got all the cacti repotted. You can see their original settings here: http://www.cactiguide.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10676 and here: http://www.cactiguide.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10675.
M. bombycina
Notocactus (Parodia) roseoluteus or rutilans, not sure which -- I'm told I need a flower for a positive ID.
M. vetula ssp. gracilis that is offsetting and flowering despite the fact that it was in an overcrowded dish garden with glued-on rocks that was overwatered so badly that it had grass growing in it!
And a freak (it came with the dish garden ).

Nice additions to your collection, CelticRose.
Yes best way to be sure which noto you have is to check out the flowers, roseoluteus flowers are usually a little paler in colour than rutilans, and the stigma on rutilans is dark maroon colour, while pinkish in roseoluteus...
rutilans...
roseoluteus...

Thanks, everyone.
CP, after seeing your pics, I can't wait till mine flowers! And if you can't tell them apart without a flower, then I don't feel so bad about my inability to positively ID this one.
Folks, the M. bombycina is an Altman's plant from Home Depot and it was only $2.97 (in a 4" pot). I didn't really want another Mamm (I want some variety in my limited space), but this one was too beautiful to pass up.

Hello CelticRose,
I too think, that you purchased some nice cacti. I am intrigued by the small clump of Mammillaria vetula ssp. gracilis. Judging by the name, the plant does not grow large, but it seems to flower when still small. How big is the stem that is developing the blossom?
Harald
P.S.: I wish you a very happy and successful cactus growing year 2009.

All of these plants are in 4" pots, except for the freak which is in a 3" pot. That should give you some idea of scale.
I think you were referring to the stem on the left? That one's 1.25" tall. The other two are 1.5" tall.
Not including offsets, of course.
All three stems have buds and spent flowers on them.

The freak is a goner. I found a couple of black spots on one of the offsets tonight, so I tossed the whole thing, pot and all, before it could infect any of my other plants. Fortunately, I had set it on a file cabinet which gets a little sun because the temperature today was going to be too low for it in the morning, so it wasn't near my other plants. I had been keeping it away from the others as much as possible anyway, just to be safe -- I didn't think it looked too healthy.
My first loss, but at least it was one that I didn't like anyway.
