A Blooming Thread
Re: A Blooming Thread
I thought that cactus on the last Picture is lost but suddenly it gave a shot of buds!

Re: A Blooming Thread
Nice flowers, but what is it?
I caught my usually reliable Mammillaria rhodantha ssp. pringlei making a nice display just before our most recent heat wave: It normally has flowers on it from late June to December, but this year is different. First, the late June heat wave caused all my cacti to go into heat dormancy, buds on the Mamms shriveled. When it was just getting started again, another hot spell - not as extreme, but I failed to move the cacti out of the afternoon sun quickly enough, they got overheated and I lost another flush of buds. Didn't make that mistake this time - while these flowers have now faded, more are coming on.

Re: A Blooming Thread
Dang, I missed it!
Oh, well, I'll catch it next year. Maybe it will have more than one flower then - the other one might bloom, too.
First time one of my Setiechinopsis mirabilis has bloomed, been checking it daily. Yesterday, I saw the bud was starting to swell, I thought it was a couple days from blooming. Then I forgot to check again after dark. Checked it this evening, it's all done.Oh, well, I'll catch it next year. Maybe it will have more than one flower then - the other one might bloom, too.

Blooms at night so you usually need to take it indoors overnight or you miss it. They are also self fertile so you should get seed. As they tend to be short lived plants 4-6 years it is best to set some seed periodically to have replacements coming along.

Re: A Blooming Thread
I walked right past it, but I was thinking about something else and forgot to look.
These are already 5 years old. There was mold in the seedling pot, I had to dry it out early. Only these 2 survived, and they were severely set back - barely grew for a year. The big one is only 2" tall (5cm). Maybe such slow growth will prolong their life span - but I am counting on getting seed.

Re: A Blooming Thread
Mammillaria was blooming last autumn-winter. But it is blooming in summer time this year for some reason.
Best regards,
