Hana's grafting in 2014/2015
Re: Hana's grafting in 2014/2015
How does tubercle grafting work anyways? Does a growing tip emerge from the severed tubercle after a period of time?
Say no to drugs, say yes to cacti
Re: Hana's grafting in 2014/2015
You can see 2 growing patterns when you grafted tubercles.
Offsets are formed on both patterns.
One is forming offsets at the areole and the other is forming offsets at the grafting joint.
In the case of Ariocarpus, offsets will be formed at the grafting joint.
If the growing energy of the stock was not large enough, the scion can not form offsets.
The scion will alive quite long but nothing will be happened.

Re: Hana's grafting in 2014/2015
Hi, Hanazono, excellent work, no doubt. I want to ask you, at what temperature you perform your grafting and keep grafted plants afterwards? It should be important thing for the success and rate of growth. If not a secret of course.
If your cacti mess in your job just forget about the job.
°C = (°F - 32)/1.8

It is not secret at all but hard to tell the exact temperature because I do not control the temperature.
I just rely on the nature weather.
The temperature in the wet-box where the grafting process is carried out should be around 35 'C.
The temperature around grafted plant will be 20~50 'C.
It is too hot in summer in here. I try to maintain within 50 'C by using shade cloths.
I think Pereskiopsis stop to grow in July only, when is the mid of winter.
We have no snow and ice in winter.

Re: Hana's grafting in 2014/2015
Wow! I am happy to get 27 deg. in the height of our summer and to do all planned grafting quick. I should try this 35° С grafting in a germinating box some day.
Yes, mine stops to grow too for a short time in Dec. & Jan. with max. temperature ~ 20° С where it is.I think Pereskiopsis stop to grow in July only, when is the middle of winter.

Grafted offsets have grown slowly but they are surely growing.
I took photos in this morning.

A high percent of (red flowering asterias x hanazono kabuto) scions have shown monstrose appearance, that is around 40%.
I took photos in this morning.

Re: Hana's grafting in 2014/2015
That indeed is a high percentage. Do you know why they get monstrose?

Re: Hana's grafting in 2014/2015
I assume it is related hybridization.
The healthy growing point was dead once and regrew by the monstrose form.
This issue has happened on own-rooted seedlings also.
I think it is not related grafting.

Updated photos
Summer has finished and autumn has started.
Ariocarpus kotschoubeyanus f Rio Verde
The last post was 31st January. It has grown very much for a month.
Since the growing speed is too high, the body skin is torn.
I have grafted 12 offsets in total.
A. hintonii: 7
A. ritteri: 4
G. mexicana: 1
The photo is one of A. ritteris.
The core color is turned to reddish and grows vigorously.

Re: Hana's grafting in 2014/2015
Well I beleive you should consider selling your grafts, you could make some good money off them. I would certainly pay a bit for one
But then again your cacti are your cacti.

Re: Hana's grafting in 2014/2015
The stock of Pereskiopis is relatively new for me.
I have tried to develop a series of process which is grafting, rapid growing speed of scion, degrafting and rooting of scion.
The trial has been just started and has not been finished yet.
All of them are trial samples and not for sale.

The temperatures in the morning and evening have been lower in this month.
Several A. kotschoubeyanus Rio Verde scions have pushed flowering buds up.
