Re: Pompoms first seeds
I really have no idea why the small seedling looks that way. It is much smaller, actually right now it looks like it is a different species from Mammillaria but I guess other growers had that kind of outcome and let's see if someone will reply on it turned out.
Your seedlings are adorable! It's really nice to watch them grow. Can you share how are you watering them right now they are out of bag?
Do you water on daily basis or different?
Also, do you plan to leave them dry during their first winter or not yet?
Thanks

It really does look like a different species. What I've read, if it's mutating, it'll grow slooowww. Slower than the others at least.DodoBrooke wrote: ↑Thu Jul 19, 2018 12:52 pm I really have no idea why the small seedling looks that way. These are my first seeds ever, so with the watering I'm pretty much guessing things and mixing different advices. So no professional ”how to water seedlings when they're out of bag”- advices coming here! At very first after uncovering for about a week, I sprayed boiled and then cooled water on the seedlings daily. Then I started to do it every other day. I remember someone told that his/hers approach with the seedlings is pretty much like ”survive or die” like thinking that only the strongest survive. I liked that so I'm not going to water the seedlings daily, I want them to survive little drought too. I water the whole pot with sterilized water when it feels too light, but I'm not keeping a track how often I do it. Sometimes
Basically I have no idea what I'm doing. I do what feels right, not what might be a right thing to do. For winter I might do a little experiment. Keeping other pot at dry side and keeping other pot watered under growing light. The winter here is pretty long, dark and cold so I'm not trying to keep the other pot dryish whole winter since it could mean 3-4 months.
I'm sorry I couldn't help too much here with the watering. The seedlings get my ”I have no idea what I'm doing”- growing method, just like my other plants. I'm just learning what every plant and different aged plants need and what they want me to do. I mix general rules with rules I've done and notices I've made and rules and advices people have given and what I've read. I just go with feel.

Re: Pompoms first seeds
You really made me laugh Pompom
But this what you are saying is exactly how I feel. I did my first sowing this May and everything went well except Echinocereus Davisii seeds, some alges started to spread around only 2 germinated seeds (out of 10) so I had to take them out of the bag. It was really looking bad how quick alges spread over the pot.
Right now I am spraying them every day and I am prepared they will be gone soon as they are really small, hardly they have few spines at the top.
But yet I am hoping to have some luck and they survive. Don't know.
I am looking forward to see how your experiment will go on and which batch will look better, the one with a winter rest or the one that will be under the lights during winter.
Is that your only try with seedlings or have you sown some more after that?

I hope your seedlings survive! You can't succes if you don't even try!DodoBrooke wrote: ↑Fri Jul 20, 2018 11:01 am Right now I am spraying them every day and I am prepared they will be gone soon as they are really small, hardly they have few spines at the top.

For now, these two are my only pots of seedlings. I stored seeds of couple fruits in a tiniest glass tube I've seen (it once had few flakes of leaf gold in) in case something happened to the first seeds. The tube is in fridge. I think I might try to sow them one day, maybe in January. Or year later. Depends on how hard it actually gets to maintain all the seedlings I think. Right now lack of space keeps me from getting new plants and potting new seeds.

Hi, PomPom,
I like your black top-dressing. It probably rises temperature in that pot with on degree or two that would boost growth of your babies. Don't be afraid to see some coloration on the skin of seedlings, if they don't look depressed, dehydrated and stunted everything is OK. That smallest one obviously lost the original point of growth and resumed it from another spot, it would recover eventually.
Enjoy the summer as your seedlings do.

Re: Pompoms first seeds
The smallest one has always been little different. It was always the darkest green and always was little off from the others. Now it looks really pathetic beside the largest seedling. It's like 10 times smaller. It has started to grow faster but I know it will always stay smallest. I'm glad it pulled trough though, it has a strong will to live.
Thank you so much for all of your advices you have given me! I don't know if the seedlings ever got this far without them.
Re: Pompoms first seeds
Not a big problem but pleasure for me. I actually decided to stop doing cacti seedlings some years ago but some continued germinating years after being collected and tossed over some soil of my pots.

Re: Pompoms first seeds
The seedlings are now 7 moths old and have been out of the bags for a month. I've been more and less neglecting with them, they get water sprays and whole watering infrequently. They might not thrive, but they are not dying either and are growing which is good enough to me.
The first batch seems to be very stable, every seedling look alike and are about same sized. Really nice batch, there's nothing to worry with them. The second batch looks so much different I can't believe they are from same mother plant. It has a variety of different looking and sized seedlings. In the picture "pot2" I've marked three seedlings which have different looks. The red one has always been little more lighter green than the others. It's grayish, whitish, darkish green. One of my favorites. Purple one has tubercles shaped little different. Orange has been one of my favorites too since it has always been more fatter and rounder than the others.
In picture "pot2-2" you can see this one seedling which has really dense and short spines. Again, one of my favorites. And of course, the alien is still alive and well. It now looks like an alien scion sitting on top of the base. It still doesn't know what it's doing and does everything and nothing at the same time. Such a nonsense. But I love it.

The small seedling indeed looks like an alien! It looks like the initial growth point was damaged and thats why it looks segmented. I like its messy hairs. It could be going monstrose...

George said same thing about the damage of growing point. It can happen without physical damage? I don't remember ever touching this individual cause it always looked pretty fragile. It could be going monstrose, but right now it's going everywhere, it could be anything. An alien today, tomorrow a bunny, who knows I'm anxiously waiting the outcome of it.ElieEstephane wrote: ↑Sun Aug 19, 2018 10:34 am The small seedling indeed looks like an alien! I've had a whole batch of seeds lose their growth point. After some quick research, the cause could be fungal or bacterial or viral. I don't know for sure....something microscopic

8 months log. The space starts slowly to run out. I never imagined to come this far with the seedlings which I sowed in the bags without any previous experience. But to be honest, I haven't done much. The seedlings have done the work and I've been just a irregular visitor with water.
I can't believe that just few months ago these cuties were just tiny seeds. And now they're like 100 times bigger.
I can't wait to see them grow bigger. I can't wait to see how they end up looking.
How long spines do you think this overprotective seedling grows when it's older?
How long it takes for the alien to grow up?
I just love them all! How can I ever give away any of these?

Your seedlings look super healthy, I hope mine will look like that in a few months. Keep it up!
